Organizations

These organizations advocate for gender equality, specifically for deaf women with mental health issues and those within the LGBTIQ (EU) community.

Deaf Worlds Inc.

This organization was established on June 9, 2007, by two Americans, Christy Smith and David Justice (DJ), named ‘Discovering Deaf Worlds’ (DDW) after their blogs. Their passion was to encourage deaf people to pursue equal opportunities, focusing on improving accessibility, language, education, and capacity building within the deaf community. In 2009, this organization officially became a non-profit dedicated to empowering deaf and hard-of-hearing communities in developing countries. In our mission, we believe that by taking a collaborative and community-centered approach, we can bring our vision to life. It focuses on sections like technology, health, social protection, and education. One of these sections is relevant to the project: health and social protection, which aims to support the mental health of deaf women and deaf LGBTIQ (EU) individuals.

GDRI Capacity Statement

Global Deaf Research Institute

The organization collects data about deaf populations worldwide. It researches their health needs and supports health policies based on this information. To ensure the deaf population receives fair treatment in public health policy, it is important to have accurate data about their experiences. Governments and community organizations need to create clear ways to share scientific information with people who use sign language.

People with disabilities are the largest minority group globally. Deafness is called an "invisible disability," which means health issues in the deaf community are often not reported in mainstream studies. Data is a powerful tool for fighting inequality and helping us push for change. It allows us to urge policymakers to take action. This data is part of a project focusing on mental health, especially the challenges faced by deaf women and deaf individuals in the LGBTIQ (EU) community.

CBM Global Disability Inclusion

Christian Blind Mission (CBM) is an organization founded in 1908 by a German pastor named Ernst Chrisoffel. After visiting Turkey, he saw how many people lived in extreme poverty, especially those with disabilities and orphaned children. This experience inspired him to create CBM to help these individuals. For 115 years, CBM has worked around the world to fight poverty and exclusion for people with disabilities. Our community-based programs have helped millions of people improve their lives.

Mental health problems are a major cause of disability worldwide. People with mental health issues and psychosocial disabilities often face stigma, discrimination, and violations of their human rights. They can be left out of work, community life, and even important decisions about their own lives. Our project focuses on the mental health of deaf women and deaf LGBTIQ (EU) individuals. We advocate for these communities to improve their access to communication and remove barriers so they receive the support they need.
